The U.S. lacks education in the areas of advanced math and science, which left the U.S. woefully behind the rest of the
world in local skilled talent. There is a lack of homegrown engineers in every industry. There is resistance to teaching
math and science among schools, science is not thought of as important math is to hard. Within one state are schools
that do well and graduate 90% of students with some degree of proficiency in the right areas, while poorer schools
graduate 40% with 0 proficiency. Manufacturing skills have been significantly devalued. New economies are exploiting the
skill sets grounded in STEM.These skill sets must be boosted in the fastest growing segments of the population-
underserved minorities and women.
The lack of education and training are the reasons that these groups do not participate at the same level as (or rate) as
white males.
American students ranked 29th in math and 22nd in science compared to other students in industrialized countries.
To many schools do not offer the full range of math and science courses (Algebra I,II, Calculus, Geometry, Biology,
Chemistry, Physics), and these that do are predominantly Asian Americans students. This comes down to zip codes.
This blocks a potential>pathway to prosperity. In 2018, there were 150,000 unfilled jobs in fields of science
and mathematics in the U.S.
with an average salary of $70,000. Females are discouraged from entering math and science because they are seen as
"male" subjects, and are directed toward social sciences and the arts around 8th grade. Instead of students being graded
solely on correct answers to math problems, raise the standard and require their work be evaluated to show how they
came up with the answer. The move toward critical thinking skills and away from remote learning is aimed at making our
